December 1976

1976 marked the two hundredth anniversary of the United States. When I reflect on 1976 I find it was not a very historic year for my family, but it was not uneventful either.

Just a year ago we and especially the children, Susan (5) and Tanya (3), were glad to come back home again after a three-month stay in Germany. We returned with high hopes for a promising business year this presidential election year. But a cool summer coincided with a cool business climate. The anticipated boom did not take place. Instead, austerity measures had to be introduced, requiring us to let five employees go.

In May, I visited Russia. Since socialism becomes more and more popular in this country, it was interesting to see what the future might have in store for us. The end of May, I enjoyed a class reunion, celebrating the 25th anniversary of my graduating from high school.

We anticipated the fourth of July activites and then observed them from the balcony of the Levins (my sister and brother-in-law) high above the Hudson. Watching Operating Sail 1976, with the tall ships parading in front of us, was quite a sight. Being a U.S. citizen already for six years, I finally felt like an American.

In August we found out that we can look forward to an addition to our family in early April. Brigitte suffered for the first few months but feels great now.

In September, Susan started Kindergarten. She is very enthusiastic about school. Her teacher says the work she does is very good. We notice that our shy little girl is suddenly much more outgoing. One setback is that Susan and Tanya prefer to speak English since Susan started Kindergarten, but we are trying to keep up German. Tanya is home with mother and a little sad that she cannot join Susan in going to school, but she is learning a lot about numbers and letters from her sister.

December marked the tenth anniversary of Theta Industries, Inc., but there was no reason for celebrating. Business has improved, however, during the past six weeks.

My family and I wish you a very happy holiday season and a healthy and prosperous 1977.
